Alexander mainly recalls the movement of his regiment over the past month towards Atlanta. In Atlanta, he observes that the buildings look like pigeon coops. He also mentions that rations are becoming scarce, especially for the horses and mules, who are regularly dying from starvation. While in Atlanta, he visited Second Lieutenant John Algoe of the 10th Michigan Infantry, who had part of his lower jaw blown off by a Minie ball.
