Alexander writes that his regiment was distributing rail ties along a portion of the Nashville Railroad and they are now constructing a large trestle over a small stream. He notes that many of the older officers in his regiment are upset about being passed over for promotion in favor of younger, less experienced officers. Alexander says he agrees with their complaints but does not want to cause trouble by speaking out.
