Janie Peabody writes to her cousin, Janie Cathcart, about various things. She expresses a desire to be Alladin so that she could use the magical lamp to conjure a "fine husband" for each of them and a "beautiful baby boy" for herself. Janie notes that there are a lot of Union soldiers in Washington, but she does not think the city is in any danger.
