UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Thirty eighth Congress House of Representatives. Washington City April 21 1864 My dear Sir, Thanks for your kind letter. Mr. [Shaw?] & his sister in law were anxious for a $900 position, which I tried for. But there are no such apointments in the Treasury; & I was compelled to accept a $1.200 one for him instead, the commission reaching me to day. It cost me a Clerkship I might have got for my Dist; but I knew no one to whom I owe so much as you, in our District; & hence it is exactly right & I am gratified very much. Excuse haste, for we are in session night & day [illegible] correspondence all in arrears. Yours truly Schuyler Colfax
