Colfax reacts to Charles Cathcart's letter in which he detailed the divisiveness of Indiana politics, but infers that the situation is improving. Colfax goes on to discuss his decision to appoint a person named Wallace as the Provost Marshal. He closes by mentioning the poor health of his wife and her doctor's recommendation that she live closer to the sea to aid in her recovery. (Note: Evelyn Clark, Colfax's wife, died three months later).
