Henry writes to his sister, Janie Cathcart, to update her on his life. He tells a story about himself and someone named Charley defending themselves against a person named Bub Cole. Apparently, Charley knocked Bub unconscious with a (steel?) rail and both he and Bub were later fined one dollar apiece for their part in the incident. Henry also notes that he has been attending school and gaining weight. The second half of the letter is written by "Miss Peabody Mrs Cathcart" who is likely Amelia H. Peabody, Charles W. Cathcart's older sister. Amelia mainly asks Janie about her health but she also discusses mending bags, eating apples, and two newborn kittens they are keeping as pets.
