Will Peabody discusses his experiences in the army thus far. He writes fondly about the landscape in Kentucky, but then complains about the poor leadership of their Captain, whom he refers to as "Early wine" (Erlewine?). Some soldiers in the company have already filed complaints to their superiors and Will mentions that they are planning to send a petition to the governor to oust the Captain. Will claims that the Captain has swindled soldiers out of money, that he treats them like "dogs," and that he appointed incompetent non-commissioned officers.
