James mainly discusses his duties as regimental quartermaster and his relationships with other officers. James agrees with his father that the Union army should confiscate supplies from local residents in the South if they cannot get the supplies in other ways. James got in trouble with a commanding officer from another regiment for not bringing supplies quickly enough, but he is not worried because his actions were consistent with his orders.
