James mentions that he tried persimmons for the first time but did not care for them. He tells a brief story in which he went to an Ohio family's house to take a goose, but he decided against it when he saw how poor they were. James says the woman offered him a chicken instead so her servant caught it and brought it to James. He goes on to update his mother on the details of his trip downriver towards Memphis.
