James writes about receiving marching orders, though he does not know where they are supposed to go. He details the scene in Memphis, estimating that 25,000 soldiers are stationed there and fires seemingly break out somewhere in the city almost every day. James then mentions that he is camped away from the majority of the troops on the high ground.
