[Penciled in on top of Scan 1] [1862. Nov. 30] Piggeon Roost Creek Mississippi 40 miles from Memphis and 7 miles from Holly Springs the last day of November 1862 . Dear Father . I will write a few lines not knowing when I will have a chance to send it I will send it when the supply trains go back to Memphis after provitions that will be in a few days . To day we are encamped and have been all day probly will be tomorrow also . Yesterday our regt was in the advance and we have the honor of taking the first rebel prisoner our Major Major Berkey was on ahead and saw one of the rebel cavalry made chase after him and took him he had a shot gun with him loaded with buck shot the major fired at him but missed him the rebels stirrup broke and he fell off. he is a pretty smart fellow. The truth is if I had a farm I should hate to have an Army pass along by it the way the boys pressed the chickens and turkeys and geese was a sin . I think it was right for they were traitors: nothing but rebels. I have just heard the chaplain say to bring our letters in in two hours and they would go tomorrow morning we have orders to march tomorrow at seven. am we will not go to Holly Springs we will go to the right about 15 miles we may have some fun as there is some rebels arou -nd here . there has been some more brought in today . I am well as usual have avery little cold I have made a mistake as to the date it is only the 29th nov instead of the 30th Nov. 1862. Yours Obedient Son Jas L Cathcart
