Janie Peabody writes to her cousin, Janie Cathcart again to update her on family news. She indicates that the war may split the family's allegiences, though none seem too keen on fighting at all. Janie goes on to describe her fear of the many young Union soldiers in Washington. She says they are the "bob tail of society" and many are complaining about their presence because they have allegedly committed several violent crimes.
