(Confidential) Treasurer's Office, Cass County, Logansport, Ind., Nov 6, 1865. Hon C.W Cathcart I have just returned from Indianapolis. when I saw Austin Brown. He showed me a reply from Genl [McClemand?]. Stating that it was proposed to call a convention of Delegates from the war democracy of the N. Western States at Chicago the 25 of November. I suppose to put in nomination Genl Logan for the presidency, for Brown told me he was to be the candidate. From a remark of Brown I think they expect to make the rank & file of the Copper head democracy follow in that lead & furthermore they expect that the Southern States will be readmitted into the Union without any conditions in regard to slavry. which if done, leaves the political questions precisely as when the rebellion was inaugerated Now, a presidential campaign upon those principles. will not win. at any rate at the next election. I intend never to hold another office & have no intrest in the matter, other than.. to see the laws of the U.S. executive in every State & Territory as they were ten years back. & the country once more at peace Please write me your opinion confidentially. The leaders of the war democracy I think are mistaken in regard to the causes of the [recent?] Union victories at the Ballot box. The war Democracy had a hand in it. truly. but there was more in the platforms, adopted by the copperheads I imagine Yours truly C. Carter
