Mary wishes that Janie would visit more often and says she misses using Janie's sewing machine. She notes that they had a very dry year, making chores and crop maintenance much more difficult. Mary goes on to discuss her children, mentioning that John wishes to see someone get married because he does not understand what marriage is.
