Milwaukee Wis Jan 20th 1862 Dear wife after So long a time I Sit down to write you a few lines to let you know that I am in tolerable good health we arrived here one week ago this morning we had a very cold trip being out all night a Sunday night on the cars a Slow train and it was So cold that the cars could not be kept comfortable though I believe there was no person forozen. A few of the boys to cold and was Sick a few days after we got here though they are all Straight on that is old man day their pins again Except one ^ Burnett was quite Sick for two or three days from a hard cold, but he was kindly cared for and received medical attention in time So that he Soon got able to leave his bed So that he is rating around with the rest of the boys Both of our Lieutenants that we Started with are now out of office Charlie Pitcher resigned and John Good could not pass muster And tell Mrs Burnett that I have the honor of Introducing to her at a distance our Second Lieutenant Mr. [A.A.?] Burnett as the Choice of the Company by the Influence of his peticular friends The descision was made last night, John Graham for first and [A.A.?] Burnett for 2nd Lieutenants and Col. Albin has Sent to Madison to day for their commissions We have was Sworn into the United States Service Yesterday the Boys Generally I believe are in very good Spirits all of the companies of the 18th Regiment is in the City Except one but we have not gone into camp yet as the Barricks are not filed out for us yet our Company is Boarding at the Central Hotel and perhaps we will remain here for a week or ten days yet I got a letter from Jabe day before yesterday he Said they was all well and that he had got his pay and Sent most all of it home I was out to Camp washburn on Staturday 2 miles west of the city I was in Capt Bishops Quarters and Saw Bill Struthers & Hue Thompson and Several other boys that that I was acquainted with that I did not know was in that company, We have not got our Uniforms yet we are informed by our Col, that we will get them to morrow then perhaps I will get my dogry type taken I believe I will not write any more at present So be a good girl at School and don't get licked I will write more peticulars Next time it is getting So dark that I cant See the line So good Bye Direct Thomas. I had 6 or 7 Bushels of wheat I left in the mill and I told Lamech Graham to Sell it and give the money to you leter Write Soon T.J. Davis
