Camp Near Corinth Mississippi August 23rd 1862 Dear Wife I Received your letter to day dated Aug 11th and was glad to hear from you and to hear that you was well; I am as well as usual: we have moved again Since I wrote to you last: On the evening of the 15th we Recd. Orders with 2 days Rations to leave Bolivar for Pocahontas a little Town on the Memphis & Charleston R.R. about 30 miles west of Corinth in Search of a band of Guirrillas who were in that Neighborhood burning cotton and pressing all citizens they could find into the Rebel Service that are able to bear arms we Started from Bolivar on the morning of the 16th and Traveled South about 16 miles and camped the next morning we pursued our march and come to a little Town [crossed out] [on the Cha] called Middleton on the Charleston & Memphis. R.Road at this place Some Rebel Guirrilla had Burned [crossed out] [illegible] a quantity of cotton the Evening before a company of the 11th Ills Cavelry was Sent out in Search of them but could not find them; Then went on to Pocahontas 7 miles further East; we traveled Several miles on the road that . 180 Rebels Traveled the day before we Stopped over night at Pocahontas and finding that the Rebels had gone South we were ordered Back to Corinth we are now camped about 3 miles South west of corinth on the line of forts that Surround the Town it is hard to tell how long we will Remain here we may be kept here to help Defend this place and then again we may be called out after Rebel Guirrillas in less then a week [crossed out] [The next day after] when we left Bolivar the Rebels got news that five thousand of our troops had been withdrawn from that place and the next day Bolivar was attacked by a Rebel force from Grand Juction and they had quite a fight I have not heard the peticulars of fight yet but heard that our forces whipped them and took Six hundred prisoners and that our Side lost 30 men killed and 60 wounded but didnt Say how many Sesesh was Killed; the Sesesh Sliped up on the wrong Side that time there was only our Reg,t and the 15th Michigan that left Bolivar and there was not five hundred men in both of them; I Rec,d a letter to day from Sarah McLain; I will send it to you and it [crossed out] [illegible] will Save me the trouble of writing about it I also Rec,d a letter from Brother William and one from Brother Isaac to day; Brother Isaac is Still at Leavenworth he wrote that he was well; William is at a Station on the Memphis and Charleston R.Road called Inka Springs 25 miles East of corinth I had not heard from him Before Since the 7th of July he wrote that he was well he Said they [Written upside down – time] had routed Several Band of Rebels [Written upside down – tell John I will answer his letter the next] and took Some prisoners and had [Written upside down – I will Settle with them here] capured about 150 Bales of cotton [Written upside down – or if they will come to the war [crossed out] [and see]] Mrs Burnetts letter dont get along yet [Written upside down - and if I owe them anything I will pay them] nor Burnetts Either; I Sent you [Written upside down - come home and I will Settle with them] Twenty Dollars in a letter the day be fore I [Written upside down – I owe them tell them to wait untill I] left Bolivar I dont know whether it will [Written upside down – anybody else that Dun you for money that] go through or not; Direct your letter to [Written upside down – Dont pay any attention to Dick Powell or] Corinth as you did before my paper is out and I must close Good Bye Thos.J.David Lucinda M Davis
