(13th 1862) Camp Near Corinth Miss September Dear Wife I once more Sit down to write you a few lines to let you know that I am as well as usual and hope this may find you in good health I have not Rec,d a a letter from you for over a week, So I thought I would write again Robert Mc has Rec,d two letters from his wife Since I had one from you, he got one from his wife this morning dated Aug 31st the last one I Rec,d from you was dated Aug. 23rd & 24th which contained a letter from Hariet to me and a day or two after; I Rec,d another letter from Susan Wilson dated Sept 1st I answered both of them; you wrote That you had Rec,d the money I Sent you from Bolivar: So in my last letter I Sent you ten dollars more but I dont know whether you will get that as not as they [try?] that they Open many letters at Cairo for Investigation we have not been paid off yet but I Supose we will be paid before a great while for our time is up for pay now I Rec,d a letter the other day from Sister Elisabeth She wrote that they was all well She said She meant to write to you She Said She in tended to have written Some time ago but Said She had So mutch writing to do that that She had neglected you; I Recd another letter from Brother Isaac yesterday he is ward Master at Leavenworth Kansas and wrote that he was well I have not more Rec,d any ^ letters from Jabez and I dont see See any account of their Battery in the papers I hear that there is Some fears intertained by Some in Wisconsin that [crossed out] [the] Indians will get in there but I do not apprehend any danger for I think they will soon be checked Three or four days ago we Recd orders to [illegible in original] keep in Readiness to March with three days cooked Rations on hand and two days Rations uncooked Some thought that we would be sent up in Kentucky and Some thought that our generals was Expecting an attack on this place by the Rebels and wished us to be Ready for a determined defence; there is Some troops leaving here and Some coming in there is Some Sesesh around here but whether there is Enough of them to Risk an attack on this place or not I cannot tell it will Require quite a Strong force to take it, At this time However the Rebels ar making a desperate Struggle to whip out our old troops before our new ones can get into the field E. Crandall is Still in the in Town Hospital ^ I have not heard from him for several days he was Running around then; Ike Odell is Still in the Hospital gaining Slowly he is able to [Rat?] around Town also; Alvin Caulkins is well he Rec,d a letter from home to day Dated Aug 31st I have not Rec,d any letter from Burnett yet and have given up the Idea of getting any I shall not Send word for him to write any more I have nothing very interesting to write this time and you must Excuse bad writing as I am quite Nervious to day and do not feel like writing [crossed out] [illegible] your letters generally come quite Regularly So I will not grumble I think I Shall get one from you tomorrow or Next day; Our Soldiers here are Anxiously waiting for [crossed out] [for] the new troops to arrive from the North So that we can double teams on them and Scoop Mr Sesesh out Some think that we will be obliged to Evacuate and leave Corinth but I think our generals will try to hold unless approached by a very heavy force of Rebels; the weather continues quite warm [crossed out] [illegible] in the daytime but the nights are quite cool we are mutch in need of Rain as we have not had any for Several weeks [crossed out] [A] Be a good girl and take care of yourself and write often I Remain yours as Ever Thos.J.Davis Lucinda.M.Davis
