Headquarters 18th Regt, Wis Vol (1862 Camp near Corinth Miss Oct 13th Dear Brother & Sister I once more Sit down to write you a line to let you know that I am in tolerable good Health and hope this will find you all well I Rec,d your letter a few days ago bearing date of Sept 29th and was verry glad to hear from you all once more I would have answered it before now but I have had no chance to write untill now; we have been Marching laying in line of Battle or fighting ^ or laying on our arms day and night from the first of this month to [the?] Twelfth So you can Judge whether I [have had?] time to write mutch or not: I Supose [you?] have heard that we had a fight at Corinth Before this time; it was fought on the 3rd & 4th of this month and we whiped the Rebels a little the nicest they have ever been cleaned out yet though it took some hard fighting to do it we had to fight the combined forces of the Rebels Since [illegible] and Van Dorn; they greatly out numbered the forces that we had here the fighting commenced on the 3rd about Six miles west of Town Our Brigade commenced the fight with the Enemy as they was out there gurading against a Surprise as we was looking for them; we would take a position and when the Enemys advance come up we would fire into them and hold them in check until the main Rebel force come up and then we would Retreat Back towards town and take another position; we kept on in that way untill about the middle of the afternoon [when?] we had Retreated back within about [page torn] miles of Corinth where two Division of [page torn] forces was drawn up in line of Battle when a general fight Ensued lasting untill night; being largely out numbered we had to give way to them in the open woods but hotly contesting every inch of ground at night all of our forces was Drawn inside of our forts; after night the Rebels got a position within half a mile of Town and Built a fort and at daylight in the morning they commenced Shelling the Town from their new fort. But they did not have time to do mutch Damage before our our Siege Gun fort got Range on them and fort Silanced their [crossed out] [illegible] and Run them from their guns and [crossed out] [illegible] we captured their pieces, Skirmishing was Kept up untill about, 10, Oclock when the Rebels made two charges on the town; one on the North and the Other on the North west Side; both at the Same time which lasted about 4 hours our Batteries and Infantry Repulsing Every charge that the Rebels made and after they got Terribally mown down and cut up the Rebels ceased firing and commenced a Retreat about ,2,O clock leaving the field litterally Strewn with their dead and wounded; We follow ed them the next morning before daylight we threw out Skirmishers through the woods and picked up quite a number of their Straglers and about noon on Sunday we Run the main Rebel force into General Hurlbarts Division on the Hatchie River being on his Road from Bolivar to Corinth Hurlbert had a head fight with them whiping their whole force with Six Thousand men and taking Eleven pieces of Artillery; we kept kept on after them until we took all their Artillery but one piece and the most of their Trains and Amunition by the time we got a distance of 45 miles to Ripley ^ [crossed out] [illegible] we had them So mutch Scattered [crossed out] [that] that it was useless to follow them further; So we give up the chase and come back to Corinth again; Our Reg was in the fight the first day but we was on the Reserve the 2nd and was not Immediately in the Engagement Our Reg,t [crossed out] [was] lost about forty men Killed wounded and missing; Our company had two wounded none Killed or missing; our Reg now musters about one hundred fighting men.
