Oct 14th 1862; well I thought I would write a few more lines as I did not write mutch of a letter before we Started Back to corinth the Next day after I wrote to you being the 10th and arrived here the 12th and I have not had time until now to write and I have Several letters to answer now one to my Brother at Leavenworth one to Sister Elisabeth one to Sarah McLain and one to David Ingersolls Mother and Sister I got a letter from them a few days ago the folks was well little Charlie well and going to School David had gone to war or was in Camp at Peoria they Said they had Recd a letter from you and was going to Answer it; they Said they would like verry mutch to See you: Sister Elisabeth wrote that She Rec,d a letter from Brother William he was taken prisoner in Middle. Tenn and was Released on parole [illegible] he was at Nashville when he wrote I have not had a letter from him for over two months; I have not Recd any letter from Jabez yet; we Just heard last night night that there had been a heavey Battle in Kentucky Between the forces of Gen, Buell and the Rebel Gen Bragg and that Buell had whiped the Rebels Badly and taken all their Artillery and many Prisoners we have not heard the peticulars of it So I dont put mutch confidence in the Report until I hear more about it Our men had quite a time Jayhawking on our last March and I thought Some of them was Rather too hard hard on the Sesh we found many of of the houses deserted by their owners with their furniture left in the houses and chickens Geese Sheep Hogs cattle mules and Horses left on the place; all of which was Eaten up and Destroyed in Many cases; One morning Our Boys Stoped at a house to get Some water and a woman come out and threw Some Lime and soap in the well the boys kept on Drawing water She finally got an Axe and cut the well Rope and let the Bucket to the Bottom The man that Belonged to the house had Shot at one of our men that morning So the Boys thought they were carrying the Joke Rather far So they Set the House on fire and Burned it to the ground One of the 15th Michigan Boys Stoped at a good looking farm House and asked the woman of the house for Some milk; She informed him that She had not a drop of milk in the House He told here that he See plenty of cows on the place and he knew that She had milk and Said he (putting a Bundle of Straws under the corner of the house and pulling out a match) and if you dont give me Some I will Burn your House down; Becoming Scared She Said for gods Sake dont Burn my house and I will give you all the Milk you want; Rather a Novel way I Should think; to Bring a Woman to her Milk; In the late fight our Reg lost about forty men in Killed wound and prisoners Three of the Tigers Started North daybefore yesterday morning They were Calvin Morley and Sebastion Baltz of Viroqua and Ben Greenman they have all been unwell for Sometime I think they will be Sent home before long; Hariet thinks I was too bad to Scold her So I do not know what I have written that She takes as Scolding I have only answered her own propositions; I have not [crossed out] [not] tried to get ahead of her [crossed out] [or out] as She Says, or [out?] Blackgard her either for that is not my Style of corespondence; though I Supose I could hold my hand if I wished to Engage in it She did not write mutch for me to Answer tell her to write again We have not Rec,d our pay yet Write soon Lucinda.M.Davis T.J.Davis
