Sunday March 14th 1862 5 I [?] do not wish you to feel uneasy about me for I feel in hopes through the Kindness of Providence that I Shall get through and get home again Burnett did not happen to be in the fight as he Said down at the River and did not have time to get to camp till after the fight commenced and then he did not Know where to find us for our army was fighting all over the woods for five or Six miles around and when you get this you will know that I was not Killed or else I could not [illegible] write nor I did not happen to get touched though Several of [?] our Boys got Bullett holes Shot in their clothes I would have wrote to you before but every thing has been in Such confusion that that I did not Know hardly what to write there is a great Many Soliers the most folks I ever saw togeather before, from all parts of the united States I Received a letter from Brother Isaac to day he [illegible] was still at Leavenworth and was well 6 I have no letter paper So I am writing this on the leaves of a book that that I found after the battle and I have no pen and Ink So I have to write with a pencil after you Read this letter you may may [?] [illegible] one of the Viroqua papers have the other two leaves to publish but Keep this one that is if they will Return them again it has been very wet [?] Since we came down here it has Rained over half the time the Leaves are getting quite green the peach trees have Shed their bloom and the apple trees are in full Bloom and the wild flowers are plenty in the woods write as as Soon as you get this Direct St Louis Mo 18th Regt Wis Vol Company, 6, and it will come on through where ever the Regt is Stationed at If I had had room I would Send you some flowers But my letter is too large So Good bye for this time Thomas.
