Head Quarters 18th Reg Wis. Vol. Camp Near Grand Juctin Tenn November 6th 1862 Dear Wife I Sit down this morning to pencil you a few lines to iform you that I am as well as usual and Trust this may find you in good health; we Started from Corinth on the 2nd of this month being 4 days ago and west a distance of forty miles ^ Arrived here at Grand Juction Night before last ^ and we are camped two miles South of the Juction at nice Clear Runing Creek Something that is not very common in this country we had quite a hard trip on account of So mutch dust which in many places was Shoe top deep and when the wind would Blow we could not See but a few Rods distance; we held Election on the 4th while on the Road; Robert Mc was one of the Judges and I was one of the Clerks; We are concentrating our forces here from Corinth Bolivar and Jackson for the purpose of making an attack of Holly Springs 18, miles South of here where the Rebels are fortified, we are getting quite a large force here but I Believe the Rebels will Evacuate Holly Springs before we pitch onto them for I dont Believe they will Stand us a fight unless they have a heavy force and are well fortified; Some of our men went out foraging yesterday and they Brought in all the fresh Beef & pork, and Sweet potatoes that we could use and a considerable amount of chickens Turkeys and Honey and in fact many [crossed out] [of our] of our men will take anything they want that they can get hold of around the Citizens farm houses; this is a better farming Country here than it is about Corinth but the products of the Soil [crossed out] [illegible] quickly vanish when the Yankees come was along; when our Brigade ^ Marching as Rear guard for our Train every few Rods we could See a hog Skin or Beef hide laying by the Road Side that our troops ahead of us had Killed; We had quite a wind Storm last night and it was quite cold but it did not Rain but little; we need Rain very bad to Settle the dust I have not mutch News to write to day I wrote to you the day we left Corinth I Just write this to let you Know where I am the is Some talk [crossed out] [illegible] that our Brigade will quarter this winter at Columbus, K.Y I hope they will perhaps they will Keep us marching Several weeks yet Before we go into winter quarters I am obliged to write this with a pencil and I dont know whether you can Read it or not I will close for the present; write Soon Direct as before From Your Most Ob,d Servant Thos.J.Davis To L.M.
