Head Quarters 18th Reg Wis, Vol Tenn Cam Near Grand Junction ^ Nov 12th 1862 Dear Wife I Rec,d a letter from you yesterday dated Nov 2nd it found me as well as usual and I was glad to hear that you was well; we are Still hear at Grand Junction and more of our forces coming in Every day I Supose from the movements that our Generals mean to make an attack on Holly Springs which is 25 miles South of this place on the Rail Road to New Orleans; at which place the Rebels are concentrating their forces and making fortifications to defend the place I think we will Rout them out of there before a great while but I dont think our Generals will be So fool heardy as to charge upon their works as they did on ours at Corinth but will Surround them and Shell them out unless they Smell a mice and leave before we get Ready to com mence on them; I Said I Supposed from the move ments of our army for the movements is all that I can Judge from for under Officers and privates are never informed of the intentions of Our Generals until after they are carried into Execu tion I dont think that we will have more than a month more of good fighting weather here this winter before we will go into Winter quarters my health is better now than it has been for Several months and the Rest of the boys are in good health Ike Odell was left at Corinth in the hospital I hear that they are making out his Discharge [illegible] Ed, Crandall is growing like a weed and is getting as fat as a china pig; we have plenty to Eat now with the Exception that we have to use heard Crackers for bread Since we come here but we have plenty of fresh beef & fresh pork and Salt porks and Bacon and most of the time all the Sweet potatoes that we could use we have Tents to Sleep in and clothes Enough to Keep us comfortable [crossed out] [in] Except in very bad weather we had a nice Shower of Rain last night which the dusty Roads mutch needed I Rec,d a letter from Sarah, McLain the other day She Said She had Jus Rec,d a letter from you and Harriet I Saw a young man yester day; Jo; Graham I used to be acquainted with in Ills he has been home on a visit he left Ills, last week he Seen little Charlie he Said he was well; I Rec,d a letter from David Ingersolls Sister yesterday I will Send it to you, you must Excuse a Short letter as I have a poor way of writing and I have Several letters to Answer now and I am cooking for the company and cant always get time to write when I wish Direct your letters as before as they will come to the Reg,t if we are not at Corinth you must not get So [illegible] [illegible] as you did before if you hear of another Battle down here Thos.J.Davis To Lucinda M Davis
