Camp At Abbieville Miss December 5th 1862 Dear Wife I Rec,d [illegible] a letter from you and Hariet Dated Nov 18th and was glad to learn that the folks was well and that you was as well as could be Expected, I am as well as usual at present and I believe all the Badax boys are well that are with us now Ben Greenman is in the Hospital at Jefferson Baricks; we have been Marching again Since I last wrote to you we Started from Grand Junction on the 28th of Nov and Arrived here, 2, days ago we come upon the Rebels, 8, mile South of Holly Springs on Wolf River last Saturday; that is their Advance guard; we Routed them from there and Drove them into their fortifications 8 miles further South on the Tallahatchie River They had Heavy fortifications on the Tallahatchie but becoming afraid that we would Surround them and get in their Rear and cut off their Supplies So on Monday they got up and Skiddaddled and left their fortifications they are Retreating towards Jackson Miss I dont know whether they mean to make any Stand between here and Jackson or not; we are about (50) miles South of Grand Junction on the RailRoad; the Rebels Burned both [crossed out] [e] the Rail Road Bridge and the State Road Bridge on the Tallahatchie we will Remain here for a few days until we get the RailRoad Repaired So we can Bring up our Supplies and; Then I Supose we will march ahead if the Roads dont get too muddy; we have had considerable Rain for Three or four days past; last nigh we had a heavy Rain which wound up this morning with a Dash of Snow but it was all gone again by noon; I Supose you are having Some cold weather now in Wisconsin but we See nothing [Written upside down on top of Scan 3] I Send Hariets letter in This [End] hardly; that Tells us it is winter But I Expect we will have a good old muddy time this winter; We have not been paid off yet there is over five months pay due us now and many of the Soldiers are Anxious to get it as the State pay is Stopped There must be many Soldiers families that need money though there are Some families that would not Save any money if they got a hundred Dollars per Month; Hariet must not be So Jealous as to herself in peticular; She writes She thought as though ^ I had Some great Spite or grudge towards her and thinks I dont want to Answer her letters I thought my letters would do you and her both for Hariet has never written mutch any way and I have considerable writing to do and a very poor way to do it and not mutch time to write in I Rec,d a letter the other day from Brother Isaac at Leavenworth he Said he had got well again he has taken to himself a Rib after the fashion of Adam he was Married on the 20th of last month he is Still acting ward Ward Master in the Hospital; I Also got a letter from Elisabeth She Said the folks was all well She did not Say anything about writing to you any more She Says She has to do all the writing for the family and there is considerable of it to do; So I Supose She neglects it on that account I have not Studdied up any name for that girl yet, I am afraid that it is such a nice girl that I cant Immagin a name pretty Enough without the Bible Dictionary So I will let it grow a while longer My paper is out and So am I Yours as Ever So good Bye T.Jefferson Davis Lucinda M.Davis
