Davis describes the crowded condition that his regiment and three others are enduring aboard a boat that is supposed to take them down the Arkansas River. He updates his wife on the condition of his friends from home as well as the weather, which has been cold and rainy. Davis is becoming increasingly disenchanted with the war as he sees and experiences the hardships of life as a soldier. He is including a specimen of Confederate money in his letter to his wife.
