Davis writes to inform his wife that he is well and that there have been skirmishes between the scouts of either sides. He picks up his letter the next day after they experienced heavy artillery fire as Confederate forces tried and failed to drive away Union gun boats from the Yazoo River. Davis's regiment and others are working on building a levy to prevent their camp from flooding. Davis also writes that many soldiers are becoming discouraged about the war effort and about the military hierarchy. He is sending a ring made of beef horn and a map that he made which shows the position of his regiment in his letter.
