Davis writes to his wife about a friend from home who is about to settle in Iowa and the business of moving and building a farm on the prairie. He also advises his wife against trying to buy her mother's land now, and tells her that they may be in a good position economically when he returns home. Davis received two months' pay and is sending ten dollars in this letter to his wife. He is also considering sending his overcoat so that if he dies, Lucinda will have a coat to fit her next husband. Davis believes he will march soon, but does not know where and does not particularly care where he will march to next. He finishes his letter with some brief business about debts owed to Davis.
