Lake Providence La. April 15th 1863 Dear Wife I again Sit down to write you a few lines in answer to your letter dated April 1st first which I Rec,d two days ago and was glad to hear that you was well; I am as well as usual and the health of the Company is Reasonably good; Robert Mc Recd a letter from home the Same date of yours his wife had Rec,d his money that he Sent in March, but you had not Rec,d the letter yet that I Sent the Ten Dollars in on the 14th of March but you had Rec,d the one next to it [Written upside down on top of Scan 2] I am out of Stamps [End] So I Supose you have it before now in my last I wrote you that I had Started you Ten Dollars more in a letter and Sixty Dollars per Express; you will perhaps get the Ten in the letter first as the Money that I Expressed did not leave here until yesterday; as I Said before the Sixty Dollars was Directed to Mrs. McMichael and you will get it of her and pay your part of the Express charges I wrote to you before; that I Sent Some clothing home by Express I have heard Since we Started the box that it was stoped on the [crossed out] [y] way and was not permitted to go through, this may be true and it may not; but I do not think the authorities had any right to Stop it after the Express Co Receipts for it; but if it goes through you will get it and if it dont, it is gone up and that is all there is about it you wrote that Baker could not pay them Notes until June; if he cannot Easily get the Money now and will pay it in June I have no objections to wait but when it is paid be sure and reckon up the Interest; If I was in your place I would not Loan any money to any body unless it would be for a verry chari table purpose to friends in want; for if I Should come home and wish to use it it would probably be more trouble to collect loned money than the Interest would be worth; and perhaps in Some lt cases not get it at all; it is verry deficu^ to know who to trust Especially Strangers I was Sworn in for three years unless Sooner discharged and not During the war; though I do not think the war will last the three years out there is no [crossed out] [w] war news of importance to write to day; Some think there will be a fight at Vicksburg Soon I find one or two words you use in your letters & every time every time you Spell them wrong or incorrect and also Some bad form to get in the habit of writing: I have looked over your letter and marked the places; I will send them back so you can look over them I have nothing more of Importance to write; write Soon and Often and give the news: I forgot; there is some talk that there will 20 days furlough to five soldiers out of Every hundred at a time, it will require about all of the three before they can all get their furloughs in and more than that it will take nearly 20 days to go home and return; I would be verry glad to get a furlough if I could remain at home any length of time; Verry Respectfly Yours As Ever Thomas .J .Davis To Lucinda Davis
