Millikens Bend La; April; 25th /63 Dear Wife ____ I Sit down this afternoon to answer your letter bearing date of Apr 5, 6, & 8th which I Rec,d this morning and was verry glad to hear from you as I have not had a letter from you for nearly two weeks before; we moved from Providence back to millikens bend on the 20th and our mail was detained Several days on that account I Shall look for another letter from you in a few days I Expected Several letters to day but I did not get any but yours; The weather is getting quite warm again and the green foliage in the forest look like mid m Sum^er in Wisconsin; you Said you had Rec,d; Ten Dollars that I Sent you in a letter of March 14th I Supose you have Rec,d the other ten that I Sent you in a letter Since last pay day and the by Express Sixty I Sent with Robert ^; before this time I was glad that the last Ring I sent you got through without being broken when I get leisure perhaps I will make another one; you Say that Baker is Selling his wheat and intended to pay them Notes when he gets money enough together but Says he cannot get Government money; That I must confess is a Singular Idea to me; for there is plenty of United States money in the country and it can be procured Just as easy as any other good money; and he can get it if he feels so disposed, and if he will not pay you united States currrancy or coin though I do not Expect coin for coin is hard to get now without a large premium but if he will not pay you Gov,ent Notes I do not wish you to Receive a Dollar from him; for the Notes of these Individual and company Banks are verry uncertain Stuff to keep on on hand in these times of money fluctuation; Be Sure and Remember that The Notes draw Interes from their date until paid [crossed out] [There has] Several of our Transport Steamers have run the Rebel Blockade at vicksburg ^ lately with good success having I Believe only lost one or two boats out of 15 or 20 that went past a large number of our Troops have gone around by way of Richmond to Carthage ,25, miles Below Vicksburg: A Report come in here last night that our forces had captured the Rebel Gen, Hindman and fifteen thousand Rebel Troops near Carthage it is Said they were coming down from Arkansas and was Trying to cross the River to Reinforce Vicksburg I do not give it as the truth but it is believed by many; I have not seen Jabe Since we come down from Providence I think the Battery is 5 ,or, 6 miles below here; you Say that Jabe wrote that he would be at home by the middle of April on Furlough I think his prospets for furlough was rather a vain Delusion; I dont expect a furlough Nor I dont think he will get one until The Siege of Vicksburg is Decided and probably not then I would like verry mutch to go home on a visit [crossed out] [he] if I could consistantly but I would rather the war was over before I went So I need not come back, I am better Satisfied to Stay in the army this Summer than I was last though I have not yet fallen in love with Dixie; We have Marching Orders; we are going out to Richmond tomorrow our Col, Says our Regt will be stationed there as provost guard Richmond is Ten miles from here on the R,R, from vicksburg to Monroe; with this letter I send you some of my Machine poetry; New father Abraham a Burlesque on copperheadism I have not time to write a verry lengthy letter to day though there is nothing of great importance to write; this leaves me as well as usual write soon Direct as usual T.J.Davis To LUcinda.
