[markings on top of Scan 1 illegible] Camp Near Vicksburg May 24th 1863 Dear Lucinda I again try to write you a few lines to let you know that I am as well as usual I do not intend to write but little this time I have not written a letter to you for over two weeks because I had no chance to send it. we left Carthage on the 9th And [?] we have had a long and active march we crossed the River at Grand Gulf on the 10th; [crossed out] [Since I] we then took up our line of march for Jackson at which place we arrived and took by Storm on the 14th we then turned bout the Next morning and Started for Vicksburg we met the Rebels from Vicksburg under Gen Pemberton on the 16th on Black River and had a big fight and cleaned the Rebels on and took four thousand prisoners we have taken 83 pieces of canon from the Rebels Since we left Grand Gulf we have Drove them back into their fortifications at Vicksburg I have not had a letter form you since I wrote to you before I Expect one this evening the captain is going with the mail in a few minutes you must not be uneasy until you hear from me again yours as Ever Thos J Davis L M.
