1863 Camp Near Vicksburg Miss June 5th Dear Wife _____ I again pick up my quill to write you again, I am as well as usual at this time; hoping this may find you well and in good Spirits; I wrote you a letter on the 1st inst[?] while at Haines Bluff; I have Recd no letter from you Since the last one was dated May 14th Robert Mc got one from his wife Dated may 26th he generally gets letters from his wife about a week later than I do from you the Reason I Supose; is; that She mails her letters ville at Spring^ those letters you mailed at at La Crosse; I Rec,d two or three days before I [illegible] got the one,s you mailed at Hockley a week before; when you can get a chance to [illegible] Send your letters to Springville Viroqua or LaCrosse; they will come a [illegible] week earlier; I Shall look for another letter from you when the next mail comes in, perhaps this evening We Retured from Haines Bluff yester (day which makes it verry disagreeable marching; I hope we Shall not have mutch more marching to do this Summer There is Three months more pay due us from uncle Sam but I do not know when we will be paid off again; I have not Saw Jabe yet his Battery is about two miles from our camp I think I Shall go and See him in a few days. Alvin Caulkins will be fit for duty again in a few days; the Boys are in good health except they are considerably worn down by the late marches but a few days rest will Set them all right again I have nothing more at present to write but I hope before I write again that Vicksburg will Surrender I Supose the folks in wis, Keep Their eyes and ears wide open; expecting important News from Vicksburg every day Write soon and Give the News Yours Always Thos.J.Davis To Lucinda M.
