Camp; Near; Vicksburg; June 11,th /63 Dear Wife ____________ I will write you a few more lines to day; as I am Somewhat at leisure; for I often do not have an oppertunity to write when I wish to do so, I Rec,d a letter from you last night dated May 28th and [crossed out] [a] was glad to hear from you again and to hear that you was well; I am Still as well as usual the wether is quite pleasent to day [illegible] we had a heavy rain yesterday and last night; which was mutch was mutch needed to allay the dust and cool the air. Military affairs Remain about the Same as when I last wrote you; The Rebels are still in their works; and we are Still holding them there; To morrow is your Birth day; when I believe you will be (19) I hope I Shall be at home before you are another year older and I think I will if I live; next Sunday the 14th little Charlie will be Seven years Old I have not Seen him Since two years ago last April; It seems that I am almost getting lost to a civilized world; I think if Silvie weighs 20lbs She must be a large and healthy child notwithstanding the number of times you wrote to me that She was Sick or unwell; you must not think She is going to die if She happens to get the B—y, ache or cholic or happens to Sneeze and cough a few times; Silvie is the propper way to Spell her name, at first I unthoughtedly Spelled it wrong; though there is no great differance. you said you wished to know what Interest I was to have on them Baker Johnson & Cos Notes[?], I thought I wrote that to you before both Notes when given on the 21st of June 1861, amounted to one hundred and Eighteen Dollars and ,35, cts, the notes Simply States; with Interest which means, Seven, per lawful interest of the State of Wis, cent ^ from date until paid; on the 21st day of June 1863 they will then have been Drawing Interes two years; on the 21st of this month; the Interest and principal of both Notes added together will amount to one hundred and thirty four Dollars and ,93,cts. as for Mrs Johnson I do not depend on her paying anything. you say you think Baker can pay the Notes any time if I would Receive This money I am Still of the Same opinion in Referance to it that I was before; and if Mr Baker has got Wis, money that is worth its face Dollar for Dollar it will not cost him but little to get Green Backs for [crossed out] [them] it; for there is a vast amount of Green Backs in circulation in the North; and where there is mutch Trading done; I cant think green backs are hard to get So dont Receive his, Wis; money; I will write to Baker to day; You Say that Susan wrote again for you to go out there and live with. I Supose She is Just Blarneying; She knows that you will not go; but She wishes to flatter you by making you believe that She is verry liberal and affectionate I did not intend to write this mutch when I commenced though I could write more .I have not Rec,d but three or four full written Sheets from you for three months you generally Say you have not time to write but little; you may look for Small letters from me until you get time to write largers or at least a few of them then again you say you have no news to write of course I do not look for great Stirring events to transpire[?] in the Badax valley every week; Why Tax your Inventive faculties and originate Something yourself, It certainly must be a Slow thinker that cant fill one Sheet of paper in a week .I Rec,d the Ring (wring) you Sent me it is too large for my little finger and to Small for the Rest but I can fix it I Shall keep it to Remember the Donor I will Send you some more Sesesh Steel pens Write Soon I Remain yours as ever;for several days Thos.J.Davis L.M.
