Camp: Near; Vicksburg July 2nd /63 Dear Wife, I again Sit down this afternoon to write you a few lines to let know that I am as well as usual I Rec,d a letter from you last night Dated June [illegible] 17th and was glad to learn that you and the Baby was better I went over to the Battery last night to See Jabe he was quite Sick for a few days but is getting mutch better; Levi Noble Stuck a cane Stub in his lame arm near the Shoulder it lame,s him So that he is off Duty for the present the rest of the Battery boys are well; we Rec,d two months pay to day I think I will Send Some to you in a few days by Express if I do I will write when I Send it Things around Vicksburg Remain about the Same as when I last wrote to you; I was Some what Surprised to hear that Mrs Johnson had paid one of them Notes as I did not think She would pay any thing while Johnson was in the Army but I am glad [crossed out] [of it] She was able to pay it I wrote to Baker Sometime ago in Referance to it; the 25th Reg,t is at haines Bluff there is two men from Co. A, down here to day they Say the boys are in pretty good health; I would like very well to see the boys but they are too far[illegible] away to go [crossed out] [there] visiting; perhaps I will get to See them after vicksburg is taken So that we will have a chance to run around a little; which I hope will not be long B…… July 3rd 1863 Well; tomorrow is the 4th of July which I do not Expect celebrate as many of the citizens do up North; By making a large Dinner and gether together old and young large and Small; Maids & Matrons and Belles a Beaus; to listen to long and learned Speeches Vocal & Martial Music and the sound of the Blank charged cannon; But we will perhaps amuse ourselves our with the Sound of ^ Cannon Shelling the Rebels in Side their works tolet them know that the yankees Still Remember the 4th of July [illegible] Robert Mc has Just gone to the Express Office to Send some money home I Sent $20, Dollars with him Mrs. McMichael will get it from Viroqua and you will get yours of her; you will pay your part of the Express fee when you get the money I dont feel like writing to day So I am ^ Nervious; I dont Know as you can Read this after you get it; you Said that Mrs Mc had got three letters from Robert Since you got any from me; I dont See the Reason of it for I am sure that I have written as often Since we come to as,he Vicksburg ^ you will begin to get them before this time; I have have got letters your ^ for two or three weeks in advance of Mrs Mc,s, letters; Since writing the above; The Rebel Gen Bowen come out to Gen Grants Head quarters with a flag of Truce; firing has now nearly ceased all around the line: I do yet not know ^ what they want it may possibly be for a Stipulation for a Surrender of Vicksburg I hope it may be so; but fear it is not; my paper is out Yours verry truly T.J.
