Thomas J. Davis Letter : July 5, 1863

In this letter to his wife, Thomas describes the rebels surrendering Vicksburg, MS on the 4th of July. Davis writes that the brass band played Dixie and there was loud and prolonged cheering. Thomas explains that he may get a furlough to come home at the end of summer or in the fall.
