[Written upside down on top of Scan 1 – Direct your letter To St Louis as you did Before – Write Soon I will Send you my Sisters Letter in this [End] Pittsburg Landing [illegible] May 8th 1862 Dear wife I again take my pen to write you a few lines, I received your letter yesterday morning dated April 28th which found me well and I was verry glad to hear that you was in good health; you dont know how glad I was to Receive a letter from you for; that was the first one that I have Rec,d in answer to any letter that I have wrote to you Since I have been here I have wrote four letters to you before this one Since the Battle [illegible] We are now about 12 miles from [crossed out] Pittsburg landing and about 8 miles from Corinth we have been moveing up Slowly for nearly 2 [?] weeks we have moved five times So we are now within five or six miles from the Enemies fortifications we have two lines of Breast works thrown up this side of the Enemies works you wanted to know if I had any money and that you would Send me Some if I was out I am mutch obliged to to you for your offer but I Shall not need it I have. 2.50. left yet and we are musterd for pay again and I supose [crossed out] we will get paid off again in a few days then I shall have nearly fifty Dollars. more than I Shall need here I will tell you all the news about the Boys that that I know of; Henry Clery is taken Prisoner Said to be wounded in the arm will Cleary is not hurt, we heard from our prisoners yesterday morning they are in Memphis all well; Capt, Layne [?] is there; they will perhaps be Exchanged back before a great while Alvin Caulkins Walt and Ike odell are all Safe: Burdette Fletcher has been Sent to the hospital he had not been able for duty Since he had the Measels in Milwaukee I think he will be discharged E. Forsyth has been quite Sick for Some time but is gainy [?] Slowly Robert Mc is not able for duty yet on account of his eyes though they Still gaining I got a letter from my Sister in Ills a few days ago they was all well She wanted me to let her Know where to write to you I wrote her your Directions [crossed out] I Supose if She writes to you that you will Answer it When you write to her Direct to Elisabeth Ditto Keithsburg Mercer Co Illinois I have found Several of my old acquaintance in the army from Ill. together with two of my cousins; this Ink is So thick that I can hardly write with it and I have to Set on the ground and write of my knee; I am mutch obiged to you for sending me this paper and Stamp though I have managed to get Stamps and paper Enough So far but you the first letter I wrote ^ I was out of paper and used Some leaves out of a book that I picked up you wanted to know if I lost my clothes and things the Sesech got my over Coat Knapsack haver Sack Canteen n and my quilt and Bla^ket; but after the Battle I made it all good again for there was all kinds of Equipage left Scattered on the Battle field Mr Burnett is not verry tough yet his two cousins Jim & Frank are at home on a furlough I don't know whether they are comeing Back or not they are Both in the 30th Ills. the Reg,t is here; if you was only here a week and See the Soldiers in Every Direction you would think there was no men left in the world at all; we are Expecting Every day to have another fight with the Rebels I hope we will clear them out and get Back further north before the hot months come Perhaps if I was at home I might Joke [?] you a little about that furlough; But I do not feel Bad about it only I would like to be at home with you; I hope I Shall be before fall; you must take care of yourself the Best times you can, and take [crossed out] Easy So Good Bye for this time Thos.
