Co.C. 18th R.W.V Vicksburg July 17th 1863 Dear Wife this morning I Sit down to write you a Small Epistle to let you Know that I am as well as usual trusting this may find you well I have not Rec,d any letter from you Since I wrote you on the 13th but I will Expect one in two or three days the wether [crossed out] [is] has been pleasant for the past few days neither Extremely hot nor verry cool we are Still here at vicksburg doing guard and fatigue duty; such, as Repairing forts and Loading provisions on the Cars for our troops at Jackson The most of Grants Army are at Jackson now; the Rebel Gen Joe Johnson has possession of Jackson but Grant [crossed out] [is] has got him about surrounded and Johnson is in nearly as bad a fix at Jackson as Pemberton was at vicksburg Johnson has as near as we can Learn about forty thousand troops, Some of them he has got from Braggs army and Some from the Potomac If we can Succeed in capturing Johnsons Army the Rebel Army of of the South west will be about give up; then Braggs Army could Soon be utterly routed or Captured [crossed out] [Our Seems to be] Our Army in the East from what we can learn have been doing good business with Lee,s Army lately in Pennsylvania Our army here are now looking with great Anxiety for the [illegible] all of [illegible] Meade,s maneuvers in the East Our Army here has begun to grant furloughs to the men to go home Tom Decker will will Start home on a furlough tomorrow Capt Layne Started home on a sick furlough night before last Only one from a company is allowed a furlough at a time and in 15, days another one [crossed out] [with] will get a furlough So it will require a long time for the whole company to get home at that rate I have not made up my mind yet to come home this next fall; Some think the war will be over in Six or Eight months If I was sure the war would end between now and nex Spring I would not come home untill I was Discharged [crossed out] [it would only] [illegible] I would like the best in the world to go home but it would only be an Aggrivation to me to go home and Stay a couple of weeks and then turn round and come Back But if I take a notion to come and can get a furlough I [crossed out] [will] think I will come in Sept, or October I hope you will try and Enjoy yourself the best you can and take care of your health; I know you must have a great deal of care and Anxiety on your mind but I hope the is a better day coming when Rebellion will cease and the union once more Roll Smoothly on the Wheels of Liberty and Husbands and wives Rejoin in the family circle and in the Society of friends; where Military [illegible] Law will have no affect and where the clashing of Steel and the Roaring of fire Arms will not be heard We[?] then will think on bye gone days And on future days Rely For hours of peace and pleasant rest For Silvie, Sis, and I Write Soon I Remain as Ever Yours T.J.
