In this letter to his wife, Thomas writes that Port Hudson was taken by General Banks resulting in the opening of the Mississippi River to Yankee boats from Itasca Lake to the Gulf of Mexico. Davis reports that Rebel General Joe Johnston has evacuated, and left Jackson MS. Thomas describes how he wants to get his picture taken without any gun ornaments.
