Vols. ______ 119 Memhis Tennessee Sept 28th 1863 Dear Lucinda I Sit down this Evening to write you a few lines to let you Know that I am as well as usual hoping this may find you well I have not Rec,d any letter from you Since the 16th of this month. the day after we landed at Helena; the Reason of it is; I Supose that [crossed out] [we] Several of our mails went on down the river to Vicksburg and will have to be sent back up the river again before we get it; Well we are begining to get back towards the North again; we Started from Helena night before last and arrived here at Memphis yesterday Evening; we Remined on board of the Boat last night and this morning we marched out to the upper End of Town and camped in a nice Grove [crossed out] [illegible] it was Just Eight months and Seven days from the time we left Memphis till Returned to it again Memphis has been Repaired up [crossed out] [illegible] cleaned out considerable Since we was here last winter It is now quite a nice looking and Interprising City It Reminded me mutch of home this morning [crossed out] [illegible] while marching through town as we passed a School House where there was about a hundred children collected for School; This is the first School I have seen in opera tion in the South ; Co Bouck has Returned from home and Rejoined us here last night; he Brought us down a new Stand of Colors for our Regt with all the Battles we have been into Inscribed on them; viz; the Battles of Shiloh Siege of Corinth; Inka; Corinth Jackson Miss; Chapion Hills and the Siege of Vicksburg The hot wether for the season has passed and the nights are getting quite cool: the has now arrived when military Opperations will be vigorously resumed; I look for a lively campaign this fall; I dont know how long we Shall Remain here we may stay Some time and again we may soon be sent to Reinforce Rosencrans at Chattanooga all military Eyes are now turned with marked 120 attention to Rosencrans Army; Rosencrans has had a very hard fight and Suffered severely from far Superior Rebel numbers but from what I can learn the Rebels have Suffered as bad or worse than our own army and now I Supose that Rosencrans has got a position So that he can hold the Rebels until he can Receive Reinforcements Enough to whip them out; we look anxiously every day for Important news from that quarter Gen Hurlbuts army Corps: will leave here Shortly for Rosencrans and Shermans Corps is arriving here from Vicksburg for that quarter Brother William was in one of Rosencrans Corps that was badly cut up I Shall feel very anxious about him until I hear from him the health of our Regt is improving; the badax Boys are all well; I wrote to you in two other letters that I Sent you some money from Helena by Express perhaps it has got through by this time I think it is likely that there will not be many many more furloughs granted again for some time at least I dont make any calculations on getting one soon; well it is getting so dark that I can hardly see the lines so I must quit for the present I will write again in a few days; if we Remain here we will get letters several quicker than we did from vicksburgh Please write Often and give the news I Remain yours Truly as Ever Good Night T.J.
