Davis and Lucinda have not been receiving letters from each other as regularly as they have been in the past, but Davis will send fifty dollars in the first letter that he writes after he receives his pay. Davis wants to build a farm out west once he gets out of the service to make a good life for Lucinda and Sylvia. Four months' pay is owed to his regiment and many men are out of money, but Davis has made enough on speculation to have spending money for some time. Davis is unsure of how long he will remain in Glendale, and he hasn't heard anything from Rosencrans' army though he knows they have suffered heavy losses keeping the Confederate army at bay.
