Co. C. 18th, Regt. Wis Vol Glendale Miss Oct 15th 1863 I Sit down this morning to write you a few lines [crossed out] [to] in order to let you Know that I am Still here and my health is about as usual; of late, I have not Rec,d any letter from you Since I last wrote and will probably not get another one from you for two or three days; as [crossed out] [the] it has only been about three days Since I wrote and your last letter was wrote on the 28th and mailed on the 30th of last month We are Still at Glendale doing picket duty there is Some talk that we will go back again towards memphis to Strengthen the guards on the Rail the Road; as ^ Rebels persist in making Raids on Trains and Tearing up the Track Occasionally; a little fight occured at Collierville 15 miles this Side of Memphis last Sunday the Rebels undertook to Intercept as they thought a passenger Train but it happened to be loaded with Soldiers and Gen Sherman was also with them Sherman got the men out in line of Battle and a Sharp fight Ensued for Several hours which Resulted in in the Repulse of the Rebels and and the capture Some prisoners; The wether [crossed out] [is] Still continues cool with considerable for Seve eral days past and things [crossed out] [g] generally begin to have the appearance of real fall wether; frosts and cold nights are becoming frequent; the 25th of Oct last year we had quite a little Snow storm at Corinth; but we have no indication of Such an Event yet this fall; there is no news to write to day I have not had any letters from any body Since I Rec,d yours; nor have we had any mail Since we will perhaps get mail to day; We Shall Expect to hear Stirring news from Rosencrans army Soon; the Rebels have a large force collected in front of him and will probably try to Drive him out of Chattanooga; But the Rebels cannot Keep their forces away from other Escential points long Enough to Stand Old Rosey mutch of a Siege; I wrote to you before that we would probably get paid in a few days; but we have not been paid yet and probably we will not be paid until after we move from here or at least So Says Report; it Seems mutch more lonesome out here on the Rail road than it did when we was here last year. I dont Know why it seems so unless; we have been so long with a large Army I think we will Remain on this Rail Road the coming winter unless we are sent back to Vicksburg in case we Should be needed there which is not unlikely though not verry probably; I have not had a letter from Jabe Since he left Vicksburg probably he has more letters of Interest to write Some when he feels like writing I guess he is not mutch of a hand to write anyway I hope he may get a furlough and go home before he has to come back to his Battery; the Battery is now at New Orleans and will perhaps Remain a long time as they have 30 [illegible] Guns which are not Easily moved on a march Well I guess I have nothing more to write this morning I will close until I hear from you I Remain your Husband and Lover as usual: Write Soon Thomas .J.
