Davis writes Lucinda and informs her he has caught a cold. He notes the Corps left Stevenson on Christmas however they did not have enough rations and most men ran out of food by dinner. Davis jokes about the lack of Christmas celebration and reminisces that last Christmas their supplies had been cut off so they were short on rations then too. Davis writes that many men have died from too much eating and too little exercise, so having a day of fasting is a good break for the body. He discusses current enlisting, and writes that he plans not to enlist again. The letter is continued on December 31, where Davis notes he suspects the war will not last much more than another year.
