Corps. 3rd Div 15.A.C Jonesboro Ala Jan 15th 1864 Dear Sister I Sit down this morning to write you a few lines in answer to your letter dated Dec 27th which I Rec'd two days ago; I was verry glad to hear from you and to hear that you was in your usual health my health is about as good as usual am though I am not verry tough I ^ Still Troubled more or less with Rheum atism and Dyspepsia but I still Do my Share of Duty as the Detail comes around my health is how ever considerable better than it was when we cain up to Memphis from Vicksburg; I have not heard from William since we came back from Chattanooga on the 4th of Dec his Regt was then about half way between Bridgeport & Chatt [Written upside down on top of Page] any so I will frank this and send the Stamped Envelop you sent me I Stoped and Staid all night with him and cousin [crossed out word] Aaron Davis they were both well and talked of Enlisting in the Veteran Service but I advised Will not to do it; but I have [crossed out letter] not heard from him since; We have had verry cold wether here since New Years that is for this country the ground has been frozen for two weeks so that Wagons and Teams would not break through in the muddiest places but it has been getting warmer the last two days and begins to look like the opening of gentle Spring in Ills and probably in a few days more that wagons cannot find any bottom in the roads; we left Stevenson Ala the day before Christmas and on Christmas day and the day after; we [Written upside down on top of Page] I am out of Stamps and cannot get postage money inside: I lost the Traveled muddiest roads that I Ever saw in my life and with out rations at that the boys thought it was a rough old Christmas party; many poor mules gave completely [crossed out word] out and could not be brought along and they were knocked in the head and left on the roadside we layed over at Larkinsvill a week and spent New Year we had more to Eat New Year's than we had on Christmas I had fresh pig and Roasted Goose and plenty of Hard Tack and Sow Belly We are about 75 miles west of Chat on the Charleston & Memphis RR and 8 miles East of Huntsville my Reg.t the 18th is at huntsville and I have not seen any of them since the 20th of last month when you write to me again dont [crossed out word] write the 18th Regt on it at all for your letter went to the Regt at Huntsville and was sent to me from there by a Teamster and I was probably a week later in getting in consequence Several others that I have told to change Directions have Directed them the same as you did and they all go to the Reg.t and I have to get them from there; we are now at work build ing a RR Bridge over flint River and when we get it finished we will go on to [illegible] and probably Stay there the rest of the Winter; Well I have not time to write a long letter to day I will write more when I hear from you again I Remain as Ever Your Humble Brother Thos.J.
