Pioneer Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C. Jonesboro Ala; Jan. 17th 1864 Dear Wife To day is Sunday and I am not on duty so I will occupy part of this Evening in writing you a few lines to let you know that I am in my usual health. I have not Rec.d any letter from you Since I last wrote the last letter I Recd from you was a dated Dec 23rd and m^iled 25th [crossed out word] we are still at Jonesboro working on a RR Bridge and we will go on to Huntsville when we get it finished the 18th is Still at Huntsville I have not been to the Regt for about a month but I hear that over half the Regt has Re-Enlisted in the Veteran Service; I think I hear you ask: did you you Enlist Thomas? to which I Reply Not mutch; Mary Ann I did not go to war for money (though I need considerable of it,) and when my three years is out I think I will bid Uncle Sams Service farewell for Several days not that I am Tired of the cause but I want some others that have not been [crossed out word] to war to come out and try it a whack: and after they have been in the field as long as I have they will know what civil law is worth; we are having quite pleasent winter weather now Since the cold Spell has passed; I Rec'd a letter last night from Belle and David Ingersoll they wrote that the folks were well they sent me little Charlies picture it is a good picture and looks quite natural only he has grown considerable since I Saw him; I have my family [crossed out word] altogether now I keep them in my writing Book where I can look at them Every day and think how glad I will be when I get home and have an opper tunity to sit down and talk with them; If you should go to Lacrosse again I wish you would go to a good artist and get your Ambrotype taken Small Size in a case and send it to me; those you had taken in viroqua ware poorly done, Ben: Tantz is not mutch of an artist any how I think I will get my picture taken and send to you when I get to Huntsville ; if you can conveniently you might have your picture taken in one side of the case and Silvies in the [crossed out word] other Though you need not put yourself to too mutch Trouble about it I have not mutch news to write this time I will write more when I get another letter from you from what I hear I Supose you have had Some verry cold wether in Wis this month but I hope it will not remain so cold all winter Well I believe I will close for the present Please to write Soon Direct your letters as before Pioneer Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C. ____ via Nashville Tenn I Remain Truly Yours as Ever Thos.J.Davis To Lucinda.
