Pioneer: Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C.______ Jonesboro: Alabama Jan'y 23rd 1864 ______ Dear Wife I Sit down this morning to write you a few lines to let you Know that I am in my usual health and hope this may find you well I Rec,d a letter from you the same Evening after I mailed my last letter to you; it was dated Dec 30th and the Next day I Rec,d another one from you dated Dec. 9th and last [crossed out word] night I Rec,d another one from you dated Nov the 8th So you See how the mail matter has been arranged for Sometime past. I was however verry glad to read them if they were old letters I Rec'd the lock of Silvies hair; I think he hair looks verry mutch like yours I think I will have a chance to see her inside of another year: then I will see if her features resemble you; I Rec'd a letter from Brother Isaac dated Jan 7th he wrote that the folks were well and the wether verry cold and that Mother was at a protracted Meeting; I Rec'd a letter yesterday from Clara Wilson; your; Niece; She wrote [crossed out word] in place of her Mother as she has been sick a long time. Clara writes a verry good letter for a girl of her age I will send it to you; The wether is quite pleasent here now it looks more like Spring than winter; we have clear frosty nights; and Bright warm sunny days; which almost give one the Spring fever that has work to do There is considerable Excitement here about the Veteran Service and many of the old Regts are going into it strong; and the 18th is going in about as Strong as any of them; all of Co: C has re-enlisted Except: Len: Davis; Tom Decker; and myself; But I dont think the Veterans of our Reg,t will get a furlough home this Spring; they have to stay here until those that are going now shall return; and by that time I think the spring campaign will begin and then there will be rest for the veterans here; I have not been to the Regt Since they left Bridgeport but I see some one of the boys nearly Every day; I think I will go to the Regt tomorrow we have got this R.R. Bridge nearly completed and when we get it done we will go on to Huntsville and probably the other side; you wanted to know what pretty name I sent S. McLains boy; I did not send any name I thought if she could not think of any more names; She had better quit having boys (thats all).. I have not rec,d any letter from her for sometime; I never got a letter from her yet; that she did not write that she was Sick; or had had been verry sick; and sometimes Expected soon to be worse; I think she must be troubled with the Hypo mixed with the Blues; and it takes spells of [illegible] in; I gave her a pretty hard rub in a letter last fall about [crossed out word] complaining So mutch; and the last letter I recd from her she appoligised about it; I seen verry plainly that She understood the rub; I Expect to die sometime myself but I dont want to make other folks miserable grumbling about it all the time; There is not mutch going on here at present Rebels are still Deserting and coming across the Tenn River into our lines and and taking the Oath under the Presidents grant of pardon; you said that you would send me some News papers if you thoughtI would get them; I can get papers here when the mail comes all right; at least a week later date than you could send to me Isaac has sent me several papers from Ills. and they came through all right; though considerably behind time: The veteran Soldiers are being Mustered in at Huntsville and will soon be paid; it is reported that those that did not Join the veterans will not be paid until next pay day; but I think it is only a Joke to get them to Enlist in the Veterans I heard the other day that Robert Mc had got [crossed out word] 16 recruits; but I did not believe it; I am on commissary guard to day and the Mail goes out at 1.oClock So I will not have time to fill the sheet to day; If you would fold your letters only cross wise of the paper ^ it would be less bulky and the paper less wrinkled up; you double the paper four times when twice is all that is [crossed out] [ne] necessary; Well I will close for this time you must take care of yourself the best you can; and if you are dissatisfied where you are perhaps you could get some good place to stay where there is no children or at least not so many I would mutch rather [illegible] [crossed out word] your Board than to have you imposed upon or have you work too hard So Good Bye Ever Remain your Faithful Husband Thomas J Davis Lucinda M.
