Pioneer 3rd Div 15th A.C. Huntsville Ala Jan'y 29th 1864 Dear Wife I Sit down this morning to write you an Epistle in answer to your letter dated Jan 10 & 13th which I Recd last night; and I was glad indeed [page torn] from you and to hear that you was well [page torn] as good as usual; We have verry nice [page torn] wether now that I ever Saw at [page torn] the year though it is cloudy to day [page torn] appearance of rain; I dont think we [page torn] mutch more cold wether here this winter. [page torn] the R.R. Bridge I wrote of before [page torn] into Huntsville day before yesterday [page torn] one of the prettiest Towns; or Cities; I [page torn] any where it is nearly Twice as large [page torn] and mutch nicer Buildings; [page torn] portion of the citizens have left it [page torn] See the boys in the Regt yesterday they are quartered in the Court house and are doing Provost guard duty in Town they have good comfortable quarters and they put on more Style than Regulars; they say [crossed out] [they are] that each man is on duty nearly every other day: and must answer to five roll calls each day and Drill two hours in the fore noon and two in the afternoon of each day those that have joined the Veterans expect to be Mustered in; in a day or two Ed Crandall Just Recd a letter from Sarah She told him to be sure and not Join the veterans but from the appearance of things now I firmly believe that the war will end by the time our three have Expired and I am in hopes that the boys will make a good thing of it for the Old soldiers have Stood the long tug of war and I think [page torn] now be partly rewarded for it; Our [page torn] those of them that has Joined Veterans [page torn] would great hopes that they ^ get home on a [page torn] first of next month; but I dont think [page torn] get a furlough this Spring or until the [page torn] is over? I sent the money to Louisvill [page torn] for a gold pen and [crossed out word] gave the [page torn] address and told him to send it to you [page torn] write if receiving it perhaps it has [page torn] by the snow Blockage; I dont know [page torn] get our pay when the veterans do or not [page torn] but I wish we would get it for it would [page torn] Trading with the boys, I dont know how long [page torn] remain here we dont have mutch to do now; though they may start us out on some R.R. before long: I would mutch rather stay here in the pioneer Corps than in the Reg,t; (Wont you be awful mad if if the veterans of Co. C. should come home this spring on furlough and we not with them or not a veteran either) I supose that Robert Mc will soon start back to the Regt; you said that you sent a letter to me by George Rogers I Expect it will be some time before I get it Well these other two sides of this sheet is to dirty that; I will not write mutch more I will look for another letter from you in a few days; you say you have written two letters to your Brother James since last Spring and that yu are looking for an answer I think if it has [page torn] long since he wrote that you would [page torn] looking for a letter by this time; I dont [page torn] writing propensities are verry extensive.
