Pioneer Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C Huntsville Ala Sunday April 10th 1864 Dear Wife I Sit down this morning to write you a few lines [crossed out word] in answer to your letter dated 24th of March which I Rec'd Several days ago but I was sent out in the country on detail and I did not have a chance to answer it until now My health is tolerable good at present I had quite a hard cold for over a month but I have got nearly entirely over it now The wether is cloudy and quite cool to day not any too warm to [crossed out word] wear my over coat as I sit in my tent writing; We are still in Huntsville our Corps is going to work Building fortifications and we will probably Remain here for sometime we are camped within a ΒΌ of a mile of the 18th Reg,t I am at the Regt nearly every day when I am in Town you wrote that you was anxious to get a letter from me hoping that I would tell you when we would be at home: If I Shouild write to you a dozen times and try my best every time I could not then tell you when we would come The Officers of the Reg,t does not Know any more about it then I do however they have been telling the boys all a long that the Regt would Surely Start home in a few days but I was satisfied that we would not go until our turn come like going to [illegible]: I am confident that we will not go home until the 4th Minn Returns and that [illegible] be the last of May or first of June and then we may be kept until fall if we are needed [crossed out word] but I think it is probale that we will go home about the first of June; you must not look for us However until you know we are coming I read a letter that Rosene Morley wrote to Ed Rogers concerning the sickness and death of his wife; She wrote a verry good letter She Said She wrote a the request of Elias's folks; I Rec'd a letter last night from Sarah McLain She Says her folks are quite well (Something new however for her to write) and that here boys were at work by the month She Said She had Just Rec'd a letter from you and had answered it So I Supose you have got before now She makes it appear that she is a verry swift write for she says she was about 5 minutes writing her letter I will send it to you: her excuses and quick writing dont corespond I will answer it it in a few days; I Rec'd a letter from Ida and Bennett Snyder a few days ago the folks were all well no news of importance Our Reg,t has been Mustered three weeks but they have not been paid yet you say that James wrote that he had not heard from me for a long time I think it will be a long time yet before he hears from me unless he writes I wrote to him nearly a year ago and have not had an answer I cant afford to do all the writing and receive no letters: Well Lucinda, I have no news to write to day so I will close I Shall look for another letter from you to day or tomorrow So Good bye for this time I Remain Ever Yours Thomas.J.Davis To Lucinda.M.Davis
