Davis writes Lucinda detailing that he hopes she never finds herself in another situation where she must serve fighting fires. He notes that his injury is much better, however he is still unable to work. Davis writes that he wants Lucinda to prepare for Illinois, for while his Regiment is still in Whitesburg, he believes they will be heading home the first of June. He details that he is not worried about the smallpox as Lucinda is, and that he has been vaccinated both before and since he entered the army. Davis also notes that in a letter he received from Jabe, Jabe wrote he has no intention of joining the Veteran Service. Davis details news of big fighting on the Potomac River, where Commanding General Grant cut off Rebel communications from Richmond. He writes that he believes the coming summer and fall will exhaust the Confederacy. In conclusion, Davis notes that while the Union has suffered many defeats due to the ignorance of their officers, there is more to the military than the North believes.
