1862) 8th Near Corinth Misisippi June Dear wife I again take pen in hand to [crossed out] [o] write to you once more I am as well as usual and I hope this will find you in good health I Rec,d your letter last night, dated May 25th & 26th and was verry glad to hear from you again, and to hear that you was well we have moved about five miles Since I last wrote to you we are about one and a half miles South of Corinth on the Jackson Road I dont know how long we will Remain here we may Stay near Corinth 2 months and again we may not Stay a week, Corinth is quite a pleasant looking Village but the most of the Houses are Built in an old fashined Style, the town is nearly entirely Deserted by its inhabitants and the Buildings are used for Hospital purposes by our forces the; Rebels Destroyed quite A quantity of their Commissary Supplies and and Supply wagons and Several Buildings before leaving Corinth, Rebel Tents and Camp Kettles and Barrels of Beef & Beans were Broken open and Scattered over the ground in large quantities I Supose they left here in Some what of a hurry and did not have Transportation to carry all their [?] traps [?] away there is two Rail Roads here the Memphis and Charleston and the Mobile & Columbus they Cros each other here at Corinth; a little over a week ago we could distinctly hear the Cars hooting; as they were Running under the control and and for the use of the Rebel army; But now we have possession of the Roads and have Captured Some Cars which our forces are Running on the Roads But I do not know how far Each way the Roads are in order to Run; The [crossed out] [illegible] whistling of the cars Seems to have a differant Sound Since they are under the control of Yankee Interprise. Sutlers and Huxters Carry on quite a Business here in the army and at an Enormous profit I will give you a list of the prices of Some articles that are Sold here Soda crackers, 25 cts. per. lb, Cheese .30. Butter .50. Eggs 30 per Doz lemons & oranges 15 cts Each pickles 1.00 per Bottle worth 25 cts Retail in LaCrose though I am happy to Say that I do not have occasion to patronise these Swindling Institutions to mutch Extent, I Read that letter that Mary Sent; to Isaac Odell he Said he was going to write a letter to day Walter is back behind in the hospital quite Sick I have not Seen him for four days Ike has not got well yet he has been quite puny for Several weeks I will Send the letter to Walt as Soon as I have a chance perhaps to day I think the boys Stand this climate now better then they did a month ago But there is considerable Sickness in the army now a great many are too Careless about taking care of their health I could be Sick Enough to go to the Hospital in a week if I Should try but I take care of my health I am Temperate both in Eating and drinking; Especially Drink ing from the fact that Whiskey [crossed out] [illegible] is worth a Dollar and a half per. qt., done up in Bottles and I am Sorry to Say that large num bers buy it at that price; but I never Seen So many men togeather where so few get drunk Alvin Caulkins & Bill Cleary both got a letter last night Robert Mc got a letter from his Duck also; Alvin is Still tough and Rugged Bill Cleary has got the yellow Jaunders though he is not mutch Sick Ed Crandall has been on the Sick list for about a week but he is able for duty again now; the paper and Stamp you Sent come verry acceptable as I am out of Stamps and cant get any for love or money.
