Pioneer Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C. Dalton Georgia Thursday July 7th 1864 Dear Wife I sit down this Evening to write you a few lines to let you know that I am in tolerable good health and on the march: we left Chattanooga on the 5th and arrived at this place this afternoon: this is 40 miles from Chattanooga: we will start on in the morning for Kingston and I will probably not write again until we get there it will take us about three days more marching to get to Kingston: I have not had any news from the front since we left Chatt,a So far we have got along verry well the weather has not been so warm Since the 4th as it was two weeks previous Dalton is the place where Johnsons Rebel Army wintered last winter the Town is about the size of Viroqua or a little larger the country around here is quite rough but there is plenty of good water Seven miles north of here is where the rebels had their stron gest defences on some verry rough hills and there is many [crossed out word] acres of different hillsides that are now covered with delapidated Shanties that the rebs quartered in last winter; our force consists of the 18th Wis, 5th Ohio Cavalry: 3 Compan ies of the 23rd Mo. and the pioneer Corps we are guarding through: the Div,n Wagons and about a thousand head of beef cattle: I dont think we will go clear through to the front for the rest of our Div,n that has gon ahead are on the R R this side of big Shanty; I have not had any mail since I wrote before and we will probably not get any until we get to Kingston I think that Sherman will soon get possession of Atlanta for he Drove them south of the Chattahoocha river several days ago when they left there they gave up the best defeces thay had you must Excuse a short letter this time I merely drop you a line to keep you posted as to my where abouts; it is getting so dark I cannot see the lines so I must quit. be a good Girl and write Often I remain Ever Yours T.J.
