Pioneer Corps 3rd Div. 15th A.C. Kingston Georgia July 11th 1864 Dear Wife I Sit down this Morning to write you a Short Epistle in answer to your letter dated 19th & 22nd [illegible] which I received yesterday and was glad to hear that you was well: I am getting in pretty good health again for me I walked the most of the way from Chattanooga to this place but I did not carry any load and we did not make verry heavy marches; we was five days coming from Chattanooga a distance of 78 miles the weather was not so hot on this march as it was two weeks previous; we had a heavy rain on friday Evening and another good rain yesterday (Sunday) evening Chattahoocha we are about 30 miles from the [crossed out word] river where Shermans army are but we cannot hear what they are doing now it is reported that our army has crossed the [crossed out word] Chattahoocha river but it is only a report: I expected to get several letters when we got here but I did not get but one and that was from you John Carpenter got one from Marcia dated the 26th he said you wrote a few lines in it: I notice that Marcia's letters are from two to four days later than yours and your letters that are mailed at Yockley are Generally mail marked from two to for days after they are written I wish you was at a place where the mail went out every day: we had a verry good trip through from Chattanooga our train was not attacked on the scout but our Cavalry captured 30 Gurrilla's and fourteen horses back near Calhoun on Saturday morning I think they will be used pretty rough: they will probably be hung as our generals are coming down on Such characters verry Strict of late the 18th is also at this place the boys in the Co I believe are all well: we do not Know yet [crossed out] [when] how long we Shall remain here we may stay until the cam paign is over and we may not Stay but a few days: Our Reg't will be verry likely to go home as soon as this campaign is over but it is useless to conjecture when that will be: So I dont trouble myself about it but wait with patience hoping soon to hear that our men have possess ion of Atlanta; I dont think there is any Reg'ts going home now but as soon as the Campaign is over I think all the veteran Reg'ts that have not been home will be permitted to go then. So you need not look for us [crossed out word] verry Soon but be contented to wait until we do come and we will talk about it then: well for this time I will close I remain Ever Your Husband: in Union T.J.
