Pioneer Corps 3rd Div 15th A.C. Cartersville Ga July 21st 1864 Dear Wife I sit down this morning to write you a short letter in answer to yours bearing date July 6th & 7th which I Rec'd this morning and was verry glad to hear from you but sorry to learn that you was not in good health but I hope this may find you well. My health is tolerable good for me So that I dont complain: I rec'd a letter from [crossed out word] you dated June 28 & 29 a few days ago but I had written to you the day before so I thought I would wait until I got another before I answered it: the weather here continues pleasent but rather warm for comfort but not so warm as it was three weeks ago we have not had any rain for over a week and we begin to think about rain again: I went out forageing day before yesterday and helped to cut oats for our Mules [crossed out word] it was the first harvesting that I have done in Dixie wheat harvest is over here but the Oats are Just fairly ripe: I have not been to the reg't since we came to this place they are stationed on the R.R. 8 miles south of here I rec'd a letter from Louisa a few days ago she said the folks as well as usual though she said they were Scared on account of the small pox being in the neighborhood she said she had not answered your letter yet but intended to soon, and then Excused herself by saying it was a burden to her to write as long as she could help it conveniently I wrote her that if she neglected to write she had no cause to Grumble because she did not riceive letters This is my birth day but I did not think of it until I commenced writing if I was at home to day would'n't you give me a stick of candy if I would be a good boy: I would like verry well to get your picture; I intended to have had mine taken and send to you before we lef huntsville but I was so Lantern Jawed all spring that I did not think you would like the picture. we and ^ was also thinking of going home and in that case I thought I would carry my picture with me: night before last our forces in front was within 4 miles of Atlanta and was then making a move and there is a report [crossed out word] in the Chatta paper of yesterday that Atlanta was taken with 15,000 prisoners, but I dont put mutch confidence in the report yet but still I think Atlanta will be ours soon if it is not now taken; our troops in front are verry mutch fatigued from their long campaign and they verry mutch need rest; I made a Keg of Beer last night the first I have made this season if you was here to day I would Treat but I dont think it would make you mutch intoxicated at least I cant get Drunk on it when I try: It is dificult to get material to make it here so I dont think I will make but little of it this season I Recd Clara Wilsons letter you sent me: She may probably wait some time if she dont answer my letter until I go to see them but I would like to go verry verry well if I had time and Oppertunity: Well my paper is about Spent and I will close write Soon I Remain Ever Your Boy T.J.Davis To L.M.
